“FUNCTIONING WELL IN A FUTILE WORLD”

Becoming Vessels of Honor - 2022

2 Corinthians 1:8-11

8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. 9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him, we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

IT’S FUTILE TO

1.      Avoid Challenges

8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure,

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything - James 1:2-4

21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 1 Peter 2:21

2.      Accept Compromises

14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

3.   Adjust Convictions

But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

4.      Abandon Community

On Him, we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

WE FUNCTION HONORABLY IN THE MIDST OF FUTILITY BY

1.    Full Surrender

9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

2.    Future Salvation (vs.10a)

10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.

9 However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him 1 Cor. 2:9

3.    Firm Spiritually (vs.10b)

On Him, we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us.

4.     Faithful Supplications (vs.11)

11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
