“Discernment - Sharpening the Conscience”

Series: Hearing the Voice of God

Hebrews 5:11-14

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

1.     When the Conscience is Clouded, the Heart becomes Calloused (vs. 11)

About this, we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’ Matthew 13:15

2.    A Calloused Heart Consistently Compromises (vs. 12-13)

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:22-25

3.    A Constant Commitment to Conviction brings Clarity of Confession. (vs. 14)

14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it - Titus 1:9
